Think about your day to day as a teacher: constant decision making! Am I right? So what if we started walking our students through what it is like for us when we make decisions? Model for them the steps we take. This would be a great step in the right direction. (in my opinion)
Again, with anything, we can’t assume that our students know how to do this. We have to actively model responsible decision making and provide them with tools on how to do this.
Next time you’re reading a book, walk through the steps the character makes to solve a problem, make a choice, or whatever it might be. Ask the students if they have ever experienced something similar.
I’d love to hear about how you teach your students responsible decision making. Leave your ideas in the comments!
