Have you ever noticed that students (or even adults for that matter) tend to forget grammar skills previously learned? I experienced this while teaching fifth grade and knew I wanted to find a simplistic way to create a review for my students. I know what you’re thinking though, “How do I find the time to do this?” I am all about simplicity for teachers and engagement for students, so I created Sentence Study to be a quick review using mentor sentences.
What exactly is Sentence Study? For both the primary and intermediate edition, I have used mentor sentences from a variety of picture and chapter books. You don’t need the books to complete this, but it does provide an excellent way to expose them to new book titles. At the top of each sentence study activity is the mentor sentence. After that, I have organized it into five days of review. Each day, the students will review a grammar skill within that sentence. (answer keys are provided)
Setting up Sentence Study is personal preference. You may want to use this as a bell ringer, a quick addition to an assignment, project it to the whole class, or in my case, I used it as a quick warm up during small group. At the beginning of each week, the students taped the half sheets into their notebooks. Each day when they came to small group, we reviewed the mentor sentence and discussed the skill for that day. Some days, they were really quick. Other days, rich discussion was created.
I have created a primary and intermediate sentence study pack. Each is set up with the same five day format. The only difference is with primary, I’ve provided a full page option to allow a larger space for recording answers. With the intermediate pack, the students will receive half pages or complete digitally.
